i voted that i prefer to be different but i think what i actually meant is that i prefer to be myself. i wouldn’t go out of my way to try to be different or stand out from the crowd but if it happens when i’m doing my own thing that’s generally ok with me.
p.s. unless there is karaoke involved.. then i would prefer not the stand out from the crowd!
I also selected nonconformism. But it depends. I still like good old fashioned manners. So I’ll happily conform to behaviours I believe are good for fostering and maintaining things worth preserving and upholding. I will offer my seat on public transport, for ex., if someone needs it more. But like Amy, I like to be myself and this often involves going against the norm.

I agree with Amy on this one.
Might need to rephrase the poll with the 21:0 scoreline? The second option is a bit negative but probably applies to 99% of the population? What you identify with or ‘prefer’ is probably quite different to actual behaviour. Good old fashioned manners are tops. No hats at the bar ma’am.
I can never make up my mind.. I sometimes despair at the suburban conformity of my life and think that no one ever is truly different from any one else anyway and feel very small and insignificant, and then sometimes conformity feels peaceful and quiet and quite pleasant…
In line with many other comments, I think there is a difference between “being different” and “not conforming”. I am striving to undertake a project that is radically different, but I know it has to fit in to what people currently understand if it’s going to take off…
Depends really… If it’s about life decisions, fashion, art design, I think it’s so personal and best NOT to conform. But in other ways… I’m a conformer… I think :)
This is a very subjective decision and I would like to think that I am a non-conformist but have a sneakey suspicion my decisions are swayed by the devilish marketing techniques I am subjected to in this hyperstimulated/consumerist driven world.
I own an Ipod should I have ticked ‘I prefer to fit in & not stand out from the crowd’, but its blue so I am only conforming about 10% because there are 8 other colours to choose from? But then I listen to obscure underground electro-pop bands from NZ on it… I am so confused I think I am going to go buy another Minuit CD on iTunes to feel less conformist.
