We’ve recently found out about this wonderful organisation in South Africa and are pleased to be able to support their request for copies of Dumbo feather for the students to study. The Amazwi School of Media Arts is an NGO, run by volunteers, which provides a journalism education for unemployed rural women.
Amazwi’s focus is on personal narrative and non-fiction storytelling thus ensuring that the women’s voices are heard and recorded. In addition to heightened levels of poverty and unemployment, black African women deal with social inequality and marginalization. The media is one domain in which these inequalities are endured: although black African women compose 46% of the South African population, they make up only 18% of the nation’s newsroom staff. Additionally, media coverage of gender issues and inequalities encompasses only 1% of national news, and the little media coverage that does focus on women primarily consists of crime or violence-related stories. This amazing, fledgling organisation aims to change that.

We asked Amazwi if there was anything they needed from us or our readers and here’s their response;
“We aren’t currently seeking volunteer applications, but if you are able to post a donation call for Amazwi, that would be amazing.
As a journalism school, Amazwi SOMA can always use things like pens, notebooks, etc. We would also like to build a library for our students which, thanks to you, will include Dumbo feather!– so any book donations are always appreciated. This includes text books, novels, memoirs, literary journals, magazines, etc. Lastly, we are currently seeking donations of laptops for student use. These can be old, new, Apple, PC– and will be accepted as-is.”
So, if you’ve got anything lying round which you think Amazwi could use, send it over. Postal address is here; www.amazwi.org/contact.html
