Yo love the new website! It is very forum based, giving people more power to add their 2 cents…
I have not yet had a chance to read my new Dumbo and had one of my friends (whom I gifted a subscription) point out my comment that was published in the ‘letters’ page! I felt so honoured…
Just wondering if you guys would consider holding conferences or other live talks or even interview documentries… I always wonder how you draw such deep and long responses from people. Also sometimes the tone and body language of people tell another side of the story.
This is a note from again seeing Kate talk at Semi Perm and having you kinda spellbinding me with your story.
Oh and if you ever need any help my hand is raised high up in the air!
Have a fantabulous festive season :)

Dear Kate, now i say dear because im sure like many other of your admiring fans, your mook is so beautiful and personalised I at times feel as though I am reading a great freinds personal writings. I say this with all honesty and sincerity when I pass on my congratulations for being the editor of a mook like no other magazine or book that every New Zealander should have at least one of sitting on their coffee table. My days are truly lit up when i get just even a glance of one of my issues of dumbo feather pass it on and for that I am truly greatful to you. My freinds and I in little Wanaka in the south island of New Zealand have started a weekly get together for cofee which we now refer to as our “Mook Club” time,(The best time of the week) where we all disecuss what hidden pleasure we found in our latest read of dumbo feather pass it on. We love you all (you and your team) and Thankyou once again for making us feel so lucky to be part of something so awe inspiringly gorgeous xox

Dear Mel – wow! A ‘Mook Club’ – LOVE it! That’s brilliant. I wonder if anyone else does a similar thing … Anyone? So pleased it’s bringing goodness to one of my favourite parts of the world. Please keep in touch and thank you for your gorgeous, heartfelt words, they mean bucketloads.

    Hi jaMiMy…
Thanks for your offer of help. There might actually be something you could do… It’s about capturing something of your story. I’ll drop you an email. As for talks etc. definitely something we’re working on. Just trying to find a spare millisecond to organise it. Totally agree that it’d be wonderful for you all to be able to see these people and ask them questions after you’ve read about them. Will do a post about it and ask for specific suggestions re format etc. Stay ‘posted’. Thanks heaps – again!

  • [...] Every week Mel and her friends get together for coffee to “discuss what hidden pleasure we found in our latest read of dumbo feather”. We first found out about their mook club when she posted this comment on our site and it got us wondering if anyone else out there does a similar thing? Any other mook clubbers? Anyone want to start one… maybe we could help…? [...]

    Hello,
I am interested in subscribing for a 4 issue subscription. Can you please confirm what issue this will start with.
I am also interested in purchasing all of the previous issues and taking advantage of the second hand option. Can you please confirm what the total will be – wasn’t sure if there was anything that could be done with the postage.
Look forward to hearing from you and any assistance you can provide.
    Thanks
    Anita

  • 9 D feather Jan 17, 2007 at 5:54 pm

    Hi Anita,
When you subscribe online there’s a drop-down menu in which you can choose for your subscription to begin with the current issue (10) or the next one (11) in March.
The total will be $40 (for the sub) + 9 x $9 (for the back issues) = $121 total
I hear you re. postage, but we can’t calculate it individually for each order – sorry!
Would love to have you on board.

    Hello Kate/Dumbo Feather
I recently purchased the complete back catalogue as well as a subscription, this magazine is truly amazing and inspiring! Reading the stories also make me feel a little upset too, not in a bad way, but more like “get off your ar$e.”
Anyway, I’m a graphic designer and keen reader and must say your magazine is quite an accomplishment in both typography and journalism.
One thing I have noticed, and I could be wrong, but the first DF I read was issue 9. Having now started reading from issue 1 the interviews in these early editions seems a lot more like you were having a conversation with the person and sometimes even the reciptiant of question, I really enjoyed this dynamic considering you are just as interesting as the guest. Anyway, just an observation.

    Thankyou Kate!
ps. love the website, would love to get some feedback on mine :)

    Bonjour!
I have bought my first Issue of Dumbo yesterday! Just wanted to stay how nice it was to discover this beautiful edition! Being a designer myself, I would like to say a BIIIG WELL DONE to the design team! Love it; graphics, typo, photos! Very personal and inspiring! MERCI for not giving up making beautiful things and for sharing it with us!

I always loovvee when my df arrives and issue 11 once again lives up to the wonderful benchmark you have set. I have to just say too that Cinderella Street on page 48 really made me sit up and take notice too. what a fabulous idea – there should be more of these. thanks for opening my eyes, again.

    Hi Kate,
just need to update my details with you for my change of address. Is there somewhere on the gorgeous new site of yours that I can do so? Apart from that, I love it! It looks and works a treat!
    Take care,
    Lisa.

  • 14 D feather Apr 29, 2007 at 12:47 pm

Hi Lisa. short answer is no – best to email us with your new details. Longer answer – we’re working on it… it’s one of those things on our ‘wish list’ for the site, and will come in due time.

  • [...] Have a look around… see what we’re about, the kind of people you’ll read about in Dumbo feather’s pages, where to find a copy of the current issue or get the back issues, subscribe, say hi, read what our readers have written about us, and tell us what you think! [...]

    Hi Kate,

I just saw you speak at d factory and had to come check out the site. I love what you folks are doing over at DF and would love to write about you guys. Even though most of my audience will be American, I think they will love being introduced to Dumbo Feather, who wouldn’t. This is the beauty of the interwebs online forums… you can tune into all the magical goodness happening across the globe.

Shoot me an email if this is something you guys would be up for ?

Keep up the good work !

    Hi Kate,

This isn’t really for your page, but I was wondering when my subscription expires. I can’t remember if I bought a 1 or 2 year sub… will you tell me when to resubscribe, or have I missed the note. Blessings Danuta Shaw

  • 18 Jane Dec 24, 2007 at 11:16 am

Kate – did you see Primavera this year? Martin Smith’s work fascinated me – would be really interested to read more about him in a Df article!!

Just finished reading your latest issue while mine was sleeping – thank you so much – I’ve gone from feeling exhausted and isolated to feeling inspired and part of a creative community.

  • 21 Cait Feb 25, 2008 at 6:24 pm

I have a confession. In my de-cluttering whirlwind my issues of Dumbo Feather were swept up into the “Ebay” pile. I even got as far as writing a blurb for them and uploading an artistic photo of them fanned out on my desk…but in the end I couldn’t do it! I started to re-read some articles and couldn’t put them down. So I’ve decided that I’m allowed to have these lovely things cluttering up my house.

  • [...] Thanks for coming by. Have a meander around and see what our readers say about Dumbo feather… Below is an e-book type-thing you can flick through with 35 pages from the current issue. Even though the e-version pales in comparison to the print one, you’ll get the idea. Just click on the image of our contents page (no downloads required, it’s viewable on your screen). [...]

i never realised until now that the brain and the heart are such poor communicators – kate, i’ve just heard you talk at AGIdeas and my heart is sore with excitement and possibility, yet my brain is too clumsy to explain. so why don’t i keep it simple: thank you, your story is igniting, dumbo is the wishlist and more.

  • 24 Nina May 2, 2008 at 2:26 pm

Kate, I too just heard you speak at AGIdeas. I nearly cried, I could so relate when you said you felt like a fake putting on your work suit and going to your old job.

The first 2 days of AGIdeas made me feel overwhelmed and like I couldn’t make a go of graphic design. Im only in 1st year, after a previous degree and 6 yrs of work in a boring job. But I know that I can really get in there and do what I love. Thanks!

Im off to buy dumbo feather……

  • 25 claire Jul 3, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Your magazine inspires me to dream of a life where every action has purpose and every day is filled with an abundance of opportunnities for creative expression. I have struggled with my belief that your work should be your passion and the stories you have bought to me give me concrete evidence that it can be. Any ammunition in the fight against an ordinary life is a blessing. thanks Adam

    Dear Kate
I was super lucky to hear you speak in the Semi Permanent design conference in Auckland yesterday – your speech was beautiful, I loved how human you were, the way you came out from the poduim and was really real infront of an audience of hundreds. Thank you for the inspiration and for sharing your love of your world with us not only through your speech but through your remarkable creation – Dumbo Feather. There’s hope for us humans yet!

Hi Kate, heard you at the OMD Think Fresh seminar in Sydney and thought it was really inspiring to hear the story of how you gave up the security of your job to pursue your passion. Just bought my first issue of Dumbo Feather – what a hidden gem! Have been raving about it to all my friends. Would like to subscribe and noticed on the back page of Issue 16 that if you subscribe you get a free t-shirt, is this also availabe if you subscribe via the web? Thanks!

  • 33 Miss Xina Aug 31, 2008 at 1:21 am

This message should’ve been written ages ag0, but kudos to you Kate for doing a fantastic job at AGIdeas! I can’t get over how funny it is that you decided to call that woman at the newspaper to promote Dumbo Feather through the birth pages. Best idea ever! I wish I had ideas like that more often.

I think a lot of people go through that ‘feeling like a fake’ phase. I spent 4 years completing a teaching degree before I crossed over to graphic design, and that whole time I was surrounded by people who really loved teaching, and it’s a weird feeling being in that kind of environment.

Now I’ve completed an Advanced Diploma of Graphic Design, half way through the degree for Graphic Design and absolutely loving it! I know many people have asked you already Kate, but if you ever need a hand with Dumbo Feather, then I will also happily raise both hands :O)

By the way, do you have any thoughts on sustainability in design and publication? I recently re-read the green edition of Desktop magazine (I think it’s the July edition), and it’s made me feel uber guilty about my own small-scale design practices.

Anyways you and your team are doing a fantastic job with Dumbo Feather. Keep up the good work, and I hope to see you at AGIdeas again sometime :O)

    Peace,

    ~* Xina *~

    Hi Kate,
First of all id like to say i LOVE the mook, not only for the fascinating content, but also as a design student, some of the layouts and ways in which typography is played with is truly amazing and inspiring. I was wondering, what influences, if any, you have in your style? is there any people you look up to for inspiration?
    Thanks,
    Hamish

Hi there, I saw Kate speak at Semi-Permanent in Auckland earlier this year and she was my favourite speaker at the conference – her talk was incredibly uplifting and inspirational and left me buzzing! Thank you so much for agreeing to speak at Semi-Permanent and thank you for all the fabulous work on Dumbo feather – I’ve just started a subscription and have also ordered back issues and I truly can’t wait to get my paws on them! Thanks again, Trina

    but…
can you tell me why the magazine is called Dumbo Feather? or is that evidence that I don’t get it??

    Hi Kate,

I have loved your magazine since I stumbled upon issue 4 all that time ago. I have recently left the theatre and events industry to open up a little independent bookshop in Woodend, Victoria – where I am absolutely thrilled to stock Dumbo Feather (which I get from the lovely Robyn at Modern Journal). I await each issue with excitement and am happy to say you are building up quite a following here in our misty little town.
Thanks again for this gorgeous publication!! We love it.

    Hi Dumbo Feather,
I just want to say an enormous thank you. I am 2/3 of the way through a journalism degree, and have been steadily losing my aspirations towards becoming a writer/journalist since beginning my course. All the lecturers seem to talk about is how we probably won’t get jobs, and if we are one of the lucky few we won’t be able to live off our earnings, and that our creativity will be extinguished, being reduced to rewording media releases.
But oh, you have made me so excited to be a journalist again! You have reminded me why I have longed for this since I was eight years old: to meet people and tell their stories, to learn more about the world, and to actually write about things that I have an interest in rather than how many potholes are in my area’s roads.
I know that I will have to slog through the media releases and the interviews with various council officers for a while, but I cannot wait until I am able to get to the stage in my career that I have always dreamed of!
    Thank you again,
    Che.

    Credit where credit is due…

I just bought my copy of DF 24 and sat down to read the article on Magda Sayed. I was really disappointed to read Magda taking credit for all the installation of the Canberra Soft Sculpture work p14. Apart from all of the volunteers who came and sewed for several days (I was one of them) there is no acknowledgment of the huge amount of work done by Michelle Fracaro of the NGA who coordinated the event and ran sessions before Magda even arrived in Canberra. Not to mention Denise aka grrl+dog who came down from Sydney and did a major amount of installation in the NGA garden as well as working with the volunteers.

Fair suck of the sauce bottle Madga!
