Harrell Fletcher's Interviews with Children

Interview between Naomi and her three-year-old child CJ

P1010215

Naomi: What’s up? (CJ is looking mournful on the swing)

CJ: Mummy, I lost all the coal out of my tender.

N: Oh. Did you?

CJ: Yes.

N: Well. How is your train going to go?

CJ: It’s solar steam.

N: Really?

CJ: Yes. (swinging for a while, then…) No. It burns plastic.

N: Oh, does it?

CJ: Yes. It does.

N: You know. Burning plastic creates a lot of air pollution.

CJ: Oh.

N: How are you going to stop the pollution?

CJ: There’s a big container in the tender to collect it. With a pipe.

N: Oh really? And then you take it away for processing?

CJ: Yes.
