Harrell Fletcher's Interviews with Children

Interview between Kerryn and her five-year-old son Will

Kerryn: So, we’re going to do an interview. What’s an interview?

Will: Something where you ask people lots of questions.

K: What questions should I ask you?

W: What’s my favourite instrument?

K: Ok, what’s your favourite instrument?

W: I have two. Guitar and drums.

K: Why are guitar and drums your favourite?

W: Because…drums make lots of noise. And electric guitars do, too.

K: How would you describe yourself? Would you say you’re a noisy person, or a quiet person?

W: [whispers] Normally quiet.

K: How about today? Is today a noisy day or a quiet day?

W: Quiet.

K: Tell me what you know about bats.

W: Bats?

K: Bats.

W: Bats? Or bat?

K: Bats.

W: Umm. They have wings. And they look scary. And they have big teeth. And they have scary eyes. That’s enough. [runs off]
