Some of you might remember an article we published in Issue 8 titled ‘When Art meets Science’ which was about a number of artists using science, or scientists using art in their work. One of which was Christopher Lansell of Wolf Rayet who had built a to-scale model of the solar system in St Kilda, Melbourne. The aim of the project was to bring to people’s attention the tiny size of the earth in the grander scheme of things… and therefore its fragility. We’ve just found out some great news. The council have just approved a rather huge grant to Wolf Rayet which will enable them to build a permanent version of it. Once completed, Australia will be home to the largest ever science/art structure on the planet! The solar system element is 5.9km long. It’ll begin near Luna Park in St Kilda and finish in Port Melborne. The next stars will be 40,396.4 km away on the same longitude which is all the way over and under the Earth plus another 389.4 km - they end up being in Hay, NSW. In a way, the model is a little bit bigger than the planet. Construction starts this week with a finish date of between 6 - 8months. Stellar!
