Connecting you

June 21st, 2007 by D feather

After our Melbourne ‘Evening with Dumbo feather & friends’ one of the people who’d come along wrote to us to say thanks and to ask if there was some way Dumbo feather could help facilitate you all making connections with each other. She’s in the process of starting up a new eco-fashion label and knew that amongst the Df community there’d be people who could help and who’d love to also be involved… Let us know whether or not this is something you’d also be keen for by posting your thoughts online. How, why, what… If we get enough interest, we’ll try to make it happen… online probably. Thoughts???

Hi! I’d be keen to be involved… ‘local’ businesses can always do with more networking! Word of mouth and local support is vital for small businesses to grow and, I believe, the more like-minded the networking is, the greater the benefit is on a personal level. I have found many local business people to be never-ending sources of motivation and inspiration when I’m getting tired and need a mental ‘pick-me-up’.

I think an online forum would be a fantastic idea! A way for subscribers to interact and share ideas; to be thinking in the same place without being physically in the same space. A natural progression for the dumbofeatherians!

Working as a visual artist in a rural area can be very isolating. Trips to the city to see what others are doing don’t come round often, so online networking would be just the ticket for me. (Despite not being able to get broadband because I choose to live in a magnificent valley) Birds of a cyber feather ….

For me Df is all about great ideas and people making it possible . Yes to more eco fashion(and may be I can help with this, my background is in fashion design and the practical side of the industry), on line forums and networking its all good and exciting.
Running a small design label in rural NSW can at times feel quite isolating and yes there are difficulties but it is possible and exciting.
On-line netwroking and froums yes please!

How about creating a dumbo feather group in facebook? It can be silly - but as a tool to connect people online it works really well and it saves building the backend yourself…

I think this is a wonderful idea. As an online producer, I would love to help out on a worthwhile project and also develop some ideas. I like the idea about creating the Dumbo Feather group in Facebook - another good way to ‘pass it on’ as well ;-)

I am setting up something similiar at present, a womens fashion label that is eco conscious and carbon conscious without sacrificing fashion element. I am between London and NZ but would love to be part of an OZ based network.
Face book group sounds like a smart option. Is anyone here on ASW?

a DF forum is a great idea as it would be a place where like minded people can exchange ideas, but get a different take on a topic as it would be coming from people with all sorts of backgrounds, experience, etc. it would be like taking an idea but giving it perspective from all over.

for every great endeavour there must be forms of support, doesn’t matter in whatever shape or type. one of the mottos of DF is the discovering, supporting and promoting of great ideas and the people behind it. and if there is someone out there that has a great idea, i think we should try and lend a hand.

    Hi everyone,

Thanks Kate for the shout out. I’m the one that wants to start the label and needs the help. I am on Facebook - not sure how to find me but I’m listed as Kylie Lewis, Melbourne Australia and have a photo of me and my beautiful Annabella.

I would love to connect with you all - especially Philippa and Leah and Danielle (Danielle, what is ASW?). Not sure the best way to do it, but my email address is kylie @ bluewindow . com . au (spammers be kind!).

I’m now really needing help production advice (have sourced fabric suppliers and branding is nearly all sorted). I am wanting to use no sweat shop label accredited manufacturers in Australia if possible.

Isn’t Dumbo Feather the best thing EVER!? Much love to you birds of xx

    Bonjour tout le monde,

I would be really interested in getting in touch with a network of people from different art and craft background! I have moved to Melbourne about 1,5 years ago and starting a new network from zero takes time! I am a graphic designer planning to get into homeware design. A forum sounds like a great idea!-) ( Kylie, I would be happy to help too if you need some graphic design done. Like a logo, business cards, etc. :)

We’re pretty excited that you seem to think you’d be interested in connecting with each other so have done some investigating and think that Facebook is prob the best way to facilitate this. We’ve set up a Dumbo feather profile in Facebook which anyone can join as a ‘friend’. Once a friend, if you’re also a current subscriber to Dumbo feather (the mag) then you’ll be invited to join the Dumbo feather ‘group’. The reason membership of the group will be restricted to Df subscribers is that it’s the only way we can be sure that people won’t abuse the system and we won’t have to moderate the discussion threads. Hope this all makes sense. Join us on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=543899991
