Patrick is out in the big wide world for the next month, collecting interviews, smashing wing mirrors off of rental cars, and meeting with all the inspiring people he can find. Most of this will emerge in the magazine and online, but he figured he’d keep you up to date along the way.

Los Angeles exists in dreams. Southern California exists in dreams. It’s funny, for all the travel I’ve done in my nomadic life, I’ve never had much interest in LA. To my mind, it is the least culturally interesting of American cities, somewhere that holds none of the promise of San Francisco, Chicago or New York (never mind the just-as-creatively thrilling small cities like Austin, New Orleans or Portland). But our pop culture places LA at the centre of all things, and so the Santa Ana blows through our dreams. There has to be something to this place, doesn’t there?
I’m staying in an old West Hollywood apartment, in classic LA style, cracked floor tiling in the bathroom, fold-down wooden table in the kitchen. Chau is an architect, and this strange, beautiful home of his is full of thrilling adaptations of the mundane into the beautiful. The laser-printed wall of North Korean propaganda children, the three-tiered light shade made of post-it notes. In the bedroom, the mattress laid out on painted brick, unspooling threads of various bright colours running down the dark feature wall. This is an apartment full of ideas that I will appropriate, and I will thank Chau for them. I won’t violate his privacy by posting my own photos of the apartment, but you can salivate here.
I’m in town, ostensibly, for one interview. Just for a couple of days, after the long-haul from Melbourne, before stepping back onto the plane and continuing on to the other side of the country. I put aside one day for the interview, and one day for exploration. At the last minute, with my jet-lagged mind slipping in and out of consciousness, the interview is postponed. It will happen next month now, on the way back home. My disappointment is rapidly drowned out by my body pulling the emergency sleep cord.
The other side of deep sleep, I give myself a mission to prove, in a day, that this place is something more than a sprawling museum of collective cultural memory that somehow ends up as Perth with more freeways. I’m staying at the intersection of a Sheryl Crow lyric and a Mountain Goats lyric, and everywhere I look, filming permits are pasted to buildings. You can’t get away from this sun; even in October, the temperature pushes 100.
In the Fairfax, LA’s rapidly gentrifying Jewish quarter, I bring magazines into Family bookstore, an incredible little store with a highly curated selection of amazing publications. A couple of doors down, Reserve, a store of menswear and vintage magazines, would have any magazine junkie/historian/junkie-historian salivating. Pristine copies of Oz, wrapped like first edition comic books, at fifty bucks a pop.
At Canter’s deli, a sign in the window points to an exhibition devoted to the words of Charles and Ray Eames. The Eames name is so tied up in the rapid expansion of modern LA that the city itself feels like some crazy of idea of theirs, cooked up at an elegant dinner party, Ray pressing paper hearts into the guests’ hands, written on them ‘let’s build a city in the sun’. The importance of this pair—a husband and wife who broke new ground in architecture, furniture design, industrial design, filmmaking and even mathematical exhibitions—can’t be overstated.
The exhibition, at the A plus D museum downtown, is equal parts strange and brilliant. It’s not so much a collection of the Eames’ work, but of creative re-interpretation of fragments of interviews, of their ideas on design and creation from throughout their lives. It takes two design icons and uses them to deconstruct the creative process, and the beauty of the humble object. Amidst the cloth bolts and collections of scissors, there are appreciations of matzah balls and challah. The Eames understood that you don’t define culture by whittling away at detached objects of luxury. You build your world with the component pieces of everyday life.
Over the road at LACMA, there’s a deeper consideration of SoCal modernism going on. Any exhibition that opens with a pristine 1936 Airstream, wood panelling and screen doors intact, is going to hold my attention. I’d never really truly thought through just how much of the great design of the mid 20th century came from a very particular California modernist aesthetic. You can see it in the profound impact of Charles and Ray (whose house interior is lovingly rebuilt in the gallery space while they fix the floors of the house proper), of Raymond Loewy’s design of the Studebaker, in Alvin Lustig’s books, in surfboard design, in the skateboards. The curves all bend towards each other in sun-dappled utilitarianism.
But then there’s that line, which either Charles said or Ray said, or maybe they both said it together. If you want to get to know the real character of LA, or any other city, then you break bread. Head to the corner of La Brea and Olympic, and back your car in. The tacos from the El Chato truck are so good, so profound and transcendental, that I consider for a moment moving the entire magazine to this parking lot. We could feed ourselves for a buck a taco, make the magazine on the hood of our Studebaker. Spend the California nights in our Airstream. It’s starting to make sense.
