A Dumbo Feather Conversation with Chad Dickerson

There is something beautiful about an honest conversation. At Dumbo Feather, we treasure these conversations. We celebrate them and their pauses, awkward silences, muddled words and endearing anecdotes. Every quarter, our writers have the pleasure of sitting with extraordinary people and relishing in such exchanges, and our editorial team has the pleasure of transforming them into words on a page. How marvelous it would be, we decided, if our dear readers could be there, in the same room, and engage in these conversations too!

Held at our very own headquarters, Dumbo Feather Conversations is our newest initiative that features an extraordinary person having an ‘on the sofa’ chat – a conversation with our lovely publisher, Berry Liberman, alongside a room full of guests.

First up on the our ‘sofa’ was Chad Dickerson, the CEO of handmade e-commerce phenomenon Etsy. In the spirit of DIY, we made our own stage (a table top propped up with Dumbo Feather archives). Needless to say, we were counting down to the event. And Chad was, of course, a fantastic speaker. He had the room (a full house!) in giggles with his rock star dreams. He shared a sobering anecdote about technology enabling social change. He shared the essence of Etsy: small is beautiful. And let’s not forget the nuggets of wisdom he gave us throughout the event: Etsy is the punk rock pizza delivery DIY of the world. Oh, and studying Shakespeare is always relevant!

Whatever Chad said was right up the alley of the audience. And it was a lovely one. There were makers. Crafters. People with a thirst for passion. People with nice friends who know how to give a great gift. Whatever it was, these were the people that have had their lives touched by Etsy.

Once again, huge props to our dear friends at Cake Wine for the lovely wine! People have been raving non-stop about the lovely illustrations gracing the bottles. We’d also like to give a shout out to the good folks of Commonwealth Bank for their support in this event. And, of course, thank you, Etsy, for existing. It wouldn’t be possible without you.

And so ‘twas a night of good company, yummy nibbles and a giant serving of food for thought. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly, and we hope to see you again. What we want to do with this series is to satisfy our insatiable hunger for extraordinary ideas and people. Chad is the first of many exciting names to come, so watch this space!
