Matthew Bax (Issue Eleven) has a cocktail bar, it’s called Der Raum, and once again it’s been nominated for a record number of awards. To be named as a finalist in any national bar award is quite something, so four nominations has to be quite something else!
If you’re keen to see (drink?) what all the fuss is about (and what on earth a ‘Sidecar Pilsner’ and a ‘Whiskey Sour Lollipop’ involve) get on down to Der Raum (438 Church St, Richmond, Melbourne) on 31 August for their monthly degustation. Matt’s generously offered to drop the price from $48 to just $25 for those who mention Dumbo feather when booking (bookings essential). Further details are here.
Matthew Bax : Issue Eleven : Introduction
Tax accountant, painter, bar-owner, Grand High Poobah… Matthew Bax was always determined to earn a living as an artist, and when a temporary diversion into tax accounting took him to Munich, he discovered his ability to do so. Or perhaps Munich discovered him. His first show sold out in two days, subsequent shows did the same and his works are now held by collectors throughout Germany and Europe. Upon returning to Melbourne, Matthew was keen to establish a lifestyle which would allow him to pursue his art further. He opened a bar and called it Der Raum, meaning ‘The Space’ or ‘The Room’ in German. Despite never having any experience in bars, other than frequenting them occassionally, Matthew’s establishment has been an incredible success. What he’d never counted on was how his passion for excellence and his vision for a different approach to cocktail-making would see his bar become a multi, multi, award-winning institution and destination for serious cocktail connoiseurs… As for why he’s also the Grand High Poobah, read on… Df
