Dumbo feather, pass it on

About

In each issue of Dumbo feather, 5 remarkable individuals tell you their stories. Their backgrounds and dreams are as unique as they are, but what unites them is their creativity, passion and integrity, and somewhere they found the courage to fly. In their own words they tell you how they discovered their passion, what inspires them, the lows as well as the highs on the journey and ultimately why they do what they do.

Each person’s passion is unique whether it’s baking the best 100% natural sourdough bread in the world, producing fabulous fashion in remote Northern Pakistan, writing poetry, making music, fighting for human rights, finding a cure for malaria, painting, choreographing, exploring, wine making, film making…

Intrigued? If you like what you see/read - then you can get your paws on the ‘real’ issue in all its 112-page, 100% recycled, matt, delicious glory here.

Dumbo feather has been described as a ‘mook’ (half mag, half book). It’s like a magazine because it’s produced quarterly, sold in newsagents and supported by advertising partners. It’s like a book because it’s a great read (almost like a series of mini-autobiographies), sold in bookstores and design stores and feels like one with it’s beautiful matt paper and weighty cover. It’ll stand on a bookshelf no problemo.

Dumbo feather respects its readers (we do not ‘dumb down’ content), the environment (by printing on 100% recycled paper using soy-based inks by one of the most eco-friendly printers in the country), and its contributors’ work.

Dumbo feather is created by a small, devoted team with love and passion:

  • Founder, publisher, editor and dreamer – Kate Bezar
    • Listen to the podcast of Kate being interviewed on ABC Melbourne’s ‘Conversation Hour’ here
    • See Kate talking about Dumbo feather during a forum at the Powerhouse Museum here
    • And in an interview with Lovemarks.com
  • Art director and wing man – Jim Parry
  • Web strategy and design - Digital Eskimo
  • Printer - Fast Proof Press
  • And numerous freelance writers, photographers and illustrators (see Dumbo feather Links for their websites)

    When we decomissioned our old website we couldn’t bear to lose all of the beautiful postings people had left on the ‘Leave your mark’ page over the past 2 years so thought we’d re-post them here;

In response to the requests for the heritage of the name Dumbo feather I must add… For me the gift is in the not knowing and I enjoy the wonder that this place can bring. For in this place of wonder I have access to an abundant source of possibility which for me is the essence behind much of what is captured through Dumbo feather. Knowing the story behind the name will simply dissolve that place of wonder…and besides…imagine Ned Kelly’s notoriety if he took the bucket off his head mid hold up.

Okay…now this section is called leave your mark. You guys no how great and life changing you are so, lets talk about something more ‘Mark Leaving’… We have to stop taking on the attitude that ’someone else will do it’. Everytime a documentary comes on television and we brush it off because there making such a difference, we cant possibly help in any way. Everytime an ad comes on television asking us to help, we think isnt what they’re doing great, but we fail to supply them with extra help. What about the time you had that dream that, that was you or you whitnessed someone dealing with it? Was that even enough to get you moving? You all know what im talking about. Make a difference, make a change…make a mark on the third world countries.

I just got sent a Dumbo Feather in the mail from my mum…Ah the joy! Is it just me, or is each issue getting better?? Heartbreakingly beautiful as always and re-restores my faith in publishing and the world at large. PS I miss ‘DO NOT BEND’ ;p

Singing the praises of DF! When DF first entered my life, I was thinking about selling my house to produce my first album (something I have dreamed of for the past 10 years, but lacked the confidence to do) Then DF leapt off the shelf into my hands and the first article was Dean Manning! Reading about his journey gave me the courage to reach for my dream and a year later (after selling my house) I had produced half an album and also met a friend who introduced me to Dean. Then I received the calling to go to India for personal growth and inspiration. I have just returned and eagerly opened issue nine right at the page on Robyn Beeche! Her inspiring life in India sent shivers through me. The synchronicity and beauty of the gifts I have received from DF have continued to give me inspiration and help me to keep creating and stay focused on my goal. I have renewed faith and courage to finish my album. I thank you Kate and all the DF souls who form an awesome collective conscoiusness, generating strength, courage and wisdom for us all. With gratitude.

Hi Kate, I heard you speak at Semi-Permanent. I luv how you came up with the name Dumbo feather for your magazine. I wish I could remember it all word for word. It is such a beautiful story. How can I hear/read it one more time?

I heard you talk at Semi-permanent and it felt so intimate as though you were speaking to me one-on-one across a coffee table. Your advice and stories are so real, I feel empowered and not afraid to speak out about my dreams. Thank you for passing it on.

Hey, thanks you for taking time to speak to us at Semi permanent this year. I’m a director of a graphic design company with similar values to yourself… and it was refreshing to connect with someone who feels the same about how we practice, provide and exist in this industry. Your story on how the name dumbo feather came about (and it’s meaning) and the star vs blob was what I will remember most from the conference.

Julia Mortdale, Sydney Jul 8, 2006
Thank you for your inspirational speech at SemiPermanent yesterday. Your passion, honesty, and devotion to your magazine was captivating, and your story was so refreshing and motivating. I went to my local news agent this morning and ordered a copy of the latest Dumbo Feather issue. I am looking forward to enjoying my first taste of its contents when it arrives. Thank you.

I now believe in karma, because I gave happinness (bought my dad a sub), and in return was delighted. Thanks Dumbo Feather, Thanks Emma Magenta. And YAY for me! Tahnee

I’m intrigued and excited and a little baffled> Its been a while since child hood and those magnificient stories have become somewhat blurred. Can someone refresh my memory… Dumbo had a feather that helped him believe in himself right? Where did he get his feather from? I need one for a friend…..

    Kristin Sydney Apr 26, 2006
Miss K! can you believe it!? I have passed on your beautiful magazine to a few of my friends already, including Lucky Phil who’s message is below. But yesterday my friend Mel gave me back the Dumbofeather issue I had lent her… with a down feather on it! She had the book on her bedside table and as she shook her fluffly Victorian style bedding, a feather excaped it and landed straight on your book! A great sign for a great future! I agree, you do have more support than you see. :) Lots of love always, Kristin

Phil Cronulla Sydney Apr 25, 2006
Dear Kate I just got passed your first issue. Pure, refreshing genius. The extent of your contribution to a better world is measured by the fact you will never really know how many important people you help set free. If you ever have a party with all your contributors, can I come??? Actually there’s an idea for ya. Why not have a party each year (maybe something for a charity), and invite all of them, then give away (via a lucky dip) one or two tickets to your loyal subscribers. That’d be cool. I’ve only read the first issue, so forgive me if you have already done it, but I’d also like to read the Kate and Dumbo feather story. You have the support of more than you can see. Enjoy the ride. With thanks and Peace Lucky Phil

Dear Kate,I loved your magazine at the first site. First of all for a nice tactile feeling and then for the straightforward and very human content. I loved dumbo feather for the simplicity of the magazine, the stories of all these Australian artists and people I couldn`t know without your idea! Your magazine confirm my first experience I had when I arrived in Sydney to live.(I am Italian) uaooo, there are so many talented and genuine artists here in Australia, I wonder who can highlight them! Thank you Dumbo Feather!
    Dave Perth Mar 30, 2006
Dear Kate I enjoyed the article on the delightfully subversive Tight Knickers, and especially the tale of the docking ferry which made me laugh until my cheeks burned. Guerrilla marketing sounds like a fun way to make a living, but despite the National Lampoon-esque antics I kept thinking about both Naomi Klein’s flawed but popular No Logo, and William Gibson’s excellent book Pattern Recognition, which amongst other things explores through fiction the slightly creepy side of viral marketing through the eyes of someone with a pathological allergy to trade marks. (I am not paid to engage in viral marketing in recommending this book to you!) So, are the TK boys, in using the latest techniques employed by sophisticated multinationals to sell stuff in more commercially predatory parts of the world, part of the problem, or part of the solution? And indeed, is there even a problem? I enjoy your “mook” very much. I work with many graphic designers in a very serious professional capacity, and to demonstrate that I, too, can tap into the zeitgeist I have described DF to at least two of them with suitable but not overstated reverence, which has on both occasions resulted in an e-mail thanking me for the lead. So, thanks for keeping me cool. Cheers.

Kate & Co Love your mook, keeps me sane - I so enjoy my time out with Dumbo! Have a story you might be interested in…not necessarily for your mook, but for a bit of both a perve and feel good emotion. Have gotten to know a Company called Way Funky (www.wayfunky.com), a couple of young lads in Vic producing Funky Trunks & Swimmers. There site is fantastic, they love what they do, even if their methods are a bit unusual… Ultra cool. But what really got me going about these guys is their Foundation/charity One Funky World (www.onefunky.com), supplying 3rd World Countries with wheelchairs for the poor who cant afford a wheelchair, and some have never been outside their homes. They have just returned again this week from Tonga. I find their story inspirational, and just wanted to share with you what they are doing…. Keep up the marvelous work Kate & Co. Hello my story is similar to those of others that have recently posted, i was in the newsagent looking for an art magazine for a weekend away…when i took a chance on the dumbo feather as it had such an unusual and quaint cover. I am a young artist and i have to say that this magazine inspired me in a way that art magazines have not in a very long time. I congratulate you on providing a publication that promotes a positive and community concious outlook. Thank you.

hi Kate, you have created a real artwork! every time i pick up a new issue i know i’m about to open a door to something very exciting, inspiring and very new! thank you for injecting beauty into the shelves of magazines…i work from home in my own business in design and art, your mook is never far away to read or just flick through when i’m feeling tired or not sure why i’m doing what i do. i also make people read the stories that i have really loved. i love going back to each issue, getting more from them over again. How refreshing!

Kate, What a beautiful “mook” you have created. I’m a single mother to a special needs child and am also studying full-time for my Nursing degree. I refuse to spend the precious little “me” time I have reading about the lives, loves and addictions of celebrities. Dumbo feather has provided me with some with much welcomed intelligent, inspirational and thought provoking respite from my frenetic and chaotic life. Thank you so very much.

Due to a r’ship breakdown, I’m been forced to reassess my whole life: where do I live, what do I want to do “when I grow up”, who am I? What has been most confronting is realising that now my future is entirely up to ME, after years of living for others, now I need to look after me, be me, and be true to me and me alone. Scary, but getting more exciting day by day. I’ve often run on intuition, so walked into Magazzino to see what jumped out at me, and there was Dumbo Feather. I’m on the cliff-face, pondering, looking, knowing I need to jump, but not sure (i.e. still in the process of reacquainting myself with my passions). Reading your mook and this forum has brought tears to my eyes. Thanks so much. There is a greatness within me, I’m here for a purpose, and I will fly. Watch out world!

I have just bought a subscription from you for my friend overseas and I wanted to share this idea with you to maybe expand on the services: I would have loved to send a personal message, like a gift card, with my subscription present so that my friend knows why she is getting it. So if you will think of something, I believe that would make it even more special to pass it on… Keep on going! Hopefully we’ll spread the idea around the world soon! Love, K

Dear Kate I have 3 out of your 4 issues. I discovered your first issue and was instantly jealous because it was just so wonderful. I am a designer of magazines and books and I was very impressed at your complete package. Not just the look and feel but the words and the integrity. I love that you left the articles in interview form. I love hearing what other people have to say, as they would say it, and i praise you for having the courage to create a whole magazine in this style. From a design point of view I also praise you for not bowing to nasty sales type people who tell you that you have to have dumbed down images, screaming type and masses of words on the front cover for it to sell. I love every cover you have done. So for the last week or so I have been hunting around the spot where my local newsagent places your mag, for the next issue. I am eager! So please keep up the fantastic work, keep finding wonderful people to bring to us and keep putting lovely images on your front covers. Thanks, and cheers Natalie

Your mook is amazing, and as someone who likes to consider herself as aware of what’s going on around the block, dumbofeather took me by surprise with it’s beautiful and inspiring vision. Incomparable with other publications out there, some of which seem to think that throwing a few artsy type graphics and some swear words at their readers will successfully inform, inspire and entertain them. Here’s to a publication with true beauty in it’s substance!! xoxox

As far as I’m concerened, Kevin Roberts is basically a walking skin-sack filled with inspiration that just leaks from his words and actions like an IV drip. Your interivew had me grinning smugly at my fellow commuters on the train to work and yapping enthusiastically about its subject matter to friends and colleagues alike. What better motivation than love? It’s not exactly quatifiable but we all know its lurking around the place just waiting for a chance to sneak up on you and make your life spin wildly with overwhelming positivity, powerful emotion and giddy excitement. Your “mook” rams a stake through the heart of my apathy and thwarts my lingering cycnicism periodically at least. Please continue in the firm knowledge that you have my support and respect for your inspirational efforts. Thanks so much.

Congratulations on Dumbo feather. It’s an excellent mag, in substance as well as style. It’s well conceived, composed, orchestrated and played out. I found every story engaging and enlightening. And the mag overall challenging and surprising. I love the overriding idea, the choice of subjects, the tone of the interviews, and the vignettes in between. I look forward to reading future issues, and seeing where Dumbo flies next.

well ….. why aren’t there more issues per year … i really should put it in my diary as to when i can expect the next issue … drives me nuts all this waiting and looking in the letterbox each day … you sure there are only 6 issues …. what about if i subscribed twice …….. that’s a good idea … a better idea would be for you to get buckets of extra staff, lots more advertisers and put out more magazines …. or would that lose the specialness? the beauty? the rarity? the light that this mook is.

Nicole OLoughlin Cobram Vic Jan 20, 2005
Inspirational, motivating, innovative, beautiful, thoughtful, insightful, magnificent, so many things that mainstream media is not today. Thank you for giving me something to read in my small rural town, actually I can’t believe the small newsagent stocked it, but they did, standing out against all the glossies and local papers. Here is to being different, not conforming and coming out on top. Well done, you offer us all hope with the stories and your own accomplishment.

    Georgie Sydney Jan 2, 2005
Issue 3 was my first dumbo feather experience and i have fallen head over heels in love! I’m 19 and discovering your mook was so refreshing! As Austrlians we are not reminded enough of the success and brilliance of our fellow countrymen and women. Dumbo feather is inspiring, enlightening and most importantly for me, REAL. I can’t wait to pass it on.

Van Tran Sydney Dec 18, 2004
Hi. Have bought your first two issues and looking forward to buying the #3! Really love the feel, cover, colours, photos, layout and interview style of your ‘mook’. The stories of the people you’ve interviewed have been so interesting and definitely inspirational. I love how there’s no sappy or stereotypical approach to their stories. The little aside pieces in each story are great too. At first I thought I’d find them annoying or distracting, but they’re anything but. I spent about two weeks reading each issue on the train every day going to work, and really enjoyed being able to read a little bit and muse and know that another inspiring story was still to come. Thanks for being a gentle pleasure and it’s a great size too! Fits with no problems in my bag!

stubbled across your mook this morning - wonderful stuff. What’s your advertising policy/rates?

Kit Peters Sydney Dec 13, 2004
Just received issue #3 - my first. A Beautiful creation! Only read a couple of the stories so far. I appreciate deeply your interview technique - it felt as tho’ I was listening to the story-teller’s true voice - that you weren’t guiding the discourse to some agenda of your own, other than to cover the ground. Love the subtle colours and low-gloss look and feel. Not having the greatest eyesight, the typepoint and reversing out is sometimes a bit challenging! And free tickets to Moonlight - and free Palace membership!! Altogether a lovely, early Xmas pressie. I feel inspired!! Onwards & Upwards! kit p

Dear Kate, Congratulations on this wonderful venture - it has made it all the way to New York ;-) I wish you all the success - you deserve it. I am back in Australia over Xmas and will definitely look for Dumbo Feather in newsagents. Please write back when you get a chance - I’d love to keep in touch. James

Dear Kate, Thank you for a magazine that highlights the rich diversity of passions, interests and meandering paths inherent in most.

Laura Hamilton Elwood Vic Nov 18, 2004
I was in need of inspiration so my mother suggested I go and see the film “Shall we Dance” what I discovered was an Invitation to read Dumbo Feather. I went straight to the newsagent and bought my first copy. I cried with joy. How refreshing to read a celebration of passion and creative spirit. I am inspired and treasure it. Thank you for going out on a limb. My wish is that the daily news discover your ideals and come to see that creativity and inspiration also make an impact on our world. Just one inspiring story a day is my hope. I wish you all the success you imagine possible.

    Belinda Canberra Nov 1, 2004
To Kate and your magnificent crew, It has taken me two weeks to absorb every detail of Dumbo feather, pass it on - it is brilliant. Thank-you for thinking up the best value for $12 i’ve read (and re-read!) in a long time. The photos have a strange feeling about them, as the colors look very different on the recycled paper. I try to be very conscious of things that cross my path to success - Dumbo feather, pass it on is one of those moments when you just know your on the right track for now. Thanks again, all the best. I look forward to #3. Regards, Belinda.

Dumbo Feather is divine. Beautiful stories that allow the reader to go off on a tangent and circle back to discover yet another gem. My well thumbed copy has already been passed on so others can enjoy your unique mook. You’ve won me.

    Jen Canberra Oct 19, 2004
This is the most wonderful mag/book concept i have ever come across in all my years, your pasion and the passion of the stories inside is truly inspiring. thankyou :)

what a wonderful magazine………in giving an insight into others’ great lives……it has inspired me to do greater things….Really sexy in design, and what an excellent font!! :)

    Jacinta Perth Sep 23, 2004
At last! A magazine in my newsagent that’s worth reading!! I am so glad that I stumbled across it, I find the interviews really inspirational and your style refreshingly natural and readable… I eagerly await the next editions! Keep up the good work :)

Emma Hambling Auckland Sep 10, 2004
Keep picking it up and reading it over and over again! Looking forward to the next!

Caroline Flammea Melbourne Aug 30, 2004
The next edition looks fabulous. Looking forward to a hearty soul feed.

Geoff Riding Newcastle Aug 27, 2004
A Great idea! just one design suggestion, I think the text line length is too long on the single column layouts, it really affects readability. I’d like to see shorter line lengths. Love the magazine.

Sophie Zalokar South Fremantle, WA Aug 26, 2004
The thing I loved most were the connections you made throughout the magazine from the features to the snippets of info on the side. Much like inspired offerings from a real cook.

    Julia Sydney Aug 21, 2004
    i loved it = )

Alicia Camenzuli Brisbane Aug 17, 2004
    Thankyou. Im inspired.

Kiri Bear Melbourne Aug 17, 2004
